WOMEN'S RESOURCE CENTER HISTORY |
|
Since its initiation, the Women's Resource Center (WRC) has continued a long tradition of working to improve the status of women in Colorado. Organized as one of seven Virginia Neal Blue Resource Centers, it hired its first paid director in January 1975. The Colorado Commission on the Status of Women initiated the centers to advance the welfare, status, progress and best interests of women throughout Colorado. Each center received a $300 American Association of University Women (AAUW) grant and informational support from the commission and its name from the first elected female in the state, a state treasurer. The Fort Collins branch of the Virginia Neal Blue Resource Center was provided with donated office space at United Campus Ministry at 629 South Howes. The center worked to coordinate existing services, develop and implement needed programs, and act as a clearinghouse for information and resources. Although the focus was on the needs of women, services such as employment counseling, health education, child care referral and peer counseling were also available to men. In August 1975, the center moved to the Community Education Center at 330 East Laurel. In May 1977, the center changed its name to the Elizabeth Stone Resource Center and sought independent incorporation as a local non-profit human service agency. The new title reflected the vitality, independence, and strength of "Aunty" Elizabeth Stone who has the first businesswomen and entrepreneur in Fort Collins. The purpose of the agency was expanded to advance the welfare, status, and best interests of women, men families, and senior citizens, with special emphasis on women. This expansion included programs in consumer traditional jobs for women, displaced home-makers counseling, credit counseling, senior employment service, child care referral, employment counseling, and outreach services for Loveland. In January the Elizabeth Stone Resource Center moved to a more accessible site at 340 East Mountain. Two years later the center moved to 228 East Mountain. The new location enhanced visibility, increased office space, and offered easier access for the handicapped and elderly. In April 1981, with the support of the Elizabeth Stone Resource Center, the Loveland Resource Center was established as a separate agency to provide employment and career services to the people of southern Larimer County. In February 1982, the name " The Women's Center" was adopted, to emphasize the agency's focus on the needs of women and to broaden the center's reach to women in all socio-economic groups, offering more services to working women and single parents. On January 1, 1984, the board of directors of The Women's Center and the Loveland Resource Center approved the administrative merger the two organizations. This merger coordinated efforts, reduced administrative costs, and improved services to women throughout the county. Under the direction of one executive director, the centers focused on people in transition, especially women, with program services in career, employment and health care. In January 1987, the Fort Collins center was moved to the Larimer County Services, Inc. Building (LCSI) and changed its name to The Women's Center of Larimer County. In 1990, the Loveland branch moved to share spaces with the House of Neighborly Services at 565 N. Cleveland. These locations, with their proximity to other agencies in Larimer County, offered an atmosphere of professionalism, community visibility, and opportunity for increased information and referral services. In January 2003, the Loveland branch moved to 313 East 4th Street and shares space with Alternatives to Violence, which is also a non-profit agency. Today,
the tradition of working to improve the status of women in Larimer County
continues. Built upon a proud history of women leaders in the community,
including current and past directors, staff, members, volunteers and
board members who continue to support the agency and its clients through
volunteer time, financial support and resources and contributing to
the overall vitality of Larimer County. |
